The past couple of days I’ve been hammering out a scene — well, I broke my own rule and rewrote a (small) bit of the stuff I had down already. The reason was because I realized the effect I was looking for wasn’t quite working. Today, I found out how to make it flow better, but it meant reworking what had come before. I briefly wrestled with the moral implications of breaking one of my Cardinal rules. But only briefly. When I had it solid in my head right now, I wasn’t going to risk having it fly out into the ether during the weeks or months before I finally get back to this spot to rewrite.
For those of you keeping score though, I’m not entirely happy with the passage yet, so there is still plenty to do when I get back to it.
(And, huh, I mentioned the other night that I’d have to throw in a knife fight to get things going. Well, I did. The funny thing though is that I totally forgot that I had said that until I re-read the post last night. Last night, after writing a (quasi) knife fight. It was a tongue-in-cheek suggestion, but I guess my sub-conscious thought it was the right move anyway. Hazzah.)
Well, we’re now at the one-month point, and over all I’m very happy that (a) I’m still writing and (b) I think the writing is improving. I still have a ways to go of course, but it’s nice to look back once in a while and appreciate the miles you’ve put in already.
Until Mile 31…
